Until recently, the deterioration of videotapes could not be stopped. Proper storage conditions could only prolong the lifespan of the tape for a little while, copying was deemed to result in loss of quality.
Digitisation offered new technical possibilities for preservation - and new problems. Because what will be stored in what way? Is playback equipment an essential part of the work, or not? What are the legal consequences of a data transfer? Where will the original be stored? To answer these questions for media art is an completely new adventure. (...)
