“For the past 25+ years, museums and other cultural institutions have been trying to figure out, first how to automate their information systems--create computer-based databases--and, more recently, how to provide the public access to this "automated information." Now that we institutions have begun to implement, with the advent of the World Wide Web, the public access side of things, one of the dirty secrets we are hiding is that many people don't care that much about the information museums have so assiduously gathered--dimensions, medium, provenance and much of the other important but less-than-fascinating minutiae of museum information systems.” (…)
