Memoriav Recommendations Vidéo: La sauvgarde de documents vidéo
Author: Felix Rauh (ed.) (2006)
Since the day that registration of moving images on magnetic tape has also become affordable and technically manageable for non-specialised institutions and individuals, the number of video files or tapes in our collections has grown extensively.
Even more surprising than the increase in volume of video is the pace of recent technological evolutions, which render technology into a museum-worthy object over night. Regarding this trend, trying to bring a video art work, a video documentation of an important event or a family home video back onto the screen after a few years is difficult. In most cases the tape itself will be in good condition, but playback equipment or spare parts are missing.
Dealing with these problems makes even specialised professionals get a headache. But in most institutions, it is not the specialised collaborators who are responsible for these tapes. This publication is especially aimed at them. It will allow them to get informed about the most common and interesting problems and solutions regarding the care of video materials in a short time.
The publication offers guidelines and information on tape inspection before playback, prioritising problems/risks, special dangers for a videotape, climate conditions, etc.
