Information meeting: File Formats Audiovisual Heritage
November 16, 2007
Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren, Brussels

The direct cause for this information meeting was a previous meeting held on June 22, 2007 at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. This ‘Expert meeting file formats audiovisual heritage’ was organised by Digital Heritage Netherlands, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and the Taskforce Audiovisual. A report of this meeting can be found here (only in Dutch).

The goal of this meeting at deBuren was the exchange of knowledge on the preservation and archiving of audiovisual documents. Topics of discussion were amongst others standardisation, shared ICT-infrastructure and European projects on preservation. A number of leading institutions from the Netherlands and Flanders gave short presentations on their approach of preservation of their analogue/digital content. What are the needs and considerations, and according to which principles does archiving take place?

All video lectures below are in Dutch.

  • Back to overview
  • Marco De Niet presented the ‘DEN ICT-register’, which acts as the backbone of the organisation. This register was created with the assistance of collaborators from different research fields in order to distribute the knowledge on digital heritage throughout involved all sectors.
  • The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision has evolved over the years into an expertise centre on audiovisual archiving. Brigit Hoomans presented the current digitisation strategy of this institute.
  • Dries Moreels presented a lecture as a delegate of the Flemish Theatre Institute, that since its foundation in 1987 has evolved into a documentation and research centre with an ever growing database and collection of documentation.
  • Erik Martens presented on behalf of the Brussels Filmmuseum. They handle the upcoming digitisation in a different way from the other institutions present. A videotape is much more compact to store away than film rolls, but does this also make their preservation easier?
  • Willem Vanneste works for the expertise centre DAVID, a research and knowledge centre on digital archiving. He presented the preservation strategy of eDAVID and their project ‘Digital Depot’.
  • Mette van Essen is responsible for the department Pictures, Image and Sound at the Gemeentearchief Rotterdam. She presented the preservation strategy of the Gemeentearchief for audio, film and video materials.
