Symposium | TechFocus I: Caring for Video Art (Symposium)
The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation (FAIC) and the AIC Electronic Media Group offer a two-day symposium at the beginning of september at the Guggenheim Museum in New York about the varieties of display modes of video art in an exhibition context.
This professional workshop aims to acquaint participants from a variety of disciplines with the technical functionality of both analog and digital video art as well as the technical and aesthetic impact of digitization, compression and format migration. A ground-breaking ‘school of seeing’ will be offered to sensitize the participants' eyes to video image structure and quality; in order to develop connoisseurship and to better recognize image errors and corrections. Sessions focus on the varieties of display modes of video art in an exhibition context and demonstrate the impact of equipment selection on the integrity of the artwork.
Over the two days, twelve curators, conservators and technicians including Joanna Phillips (Guggenheim Museum), Chrissie Iles (Whitney Museum), Steven Dye (SF MOMA), Agathe Jarczyk (Video Conservator, Bern, Switzerland) , Howard Besser (New York University), and Maurice Schechter (DuArt Film & Video) will provide insight into their decision-making processes and discuss their perspectives on the variability of video art installations.
